Baldwin Effect

Hypothesis that an advantageous phenotypic trait can appear in a few individuals in response to environmental factors; an individual could, in the absence of such factors, become endowed with the advantageous trait by mutation and the gene responsible would then spread through the population. A controversial hypothesis.

See organic selection theory. Aka genetic assimilation, the Baldwin-Morgan-Osborn hypothesis.
