Bates, Henry Walter

Natural historian; with only £100 between them, Bates and Alfred Russel Wallace embarked for South America in 1848, navigating up the Amazon at least 1000 miles. Bates is best remembered for his hypotheses concerning interspecific mimicry (Batesian mimicry). Author of The Naturalist on the River Amazons (1863).
