Bau De L’Aubesier

Archaeological site in southeastern France, dated to 200-175 kya (thermoluminescence), and that contains Mousterian artifacts and hominid remains from at least 11 individuals assigned to Homo cf. neanderthalensis. A mandible (Aubesier 11), with extremely worn teeth and periodontal disease resulting in premortem tooth los, has been interpreted as a sign of care-giving in Neandertals, since this individual is presumed to have been incapacitated for several months.
