Benninghof’s Lines

Small cracks and splits that radiate from a hole made in a dried cranium by piercing it with an awl. The lines indicate forces of pressure, torsion and stress, and follow a general pattern of tension created by chewing. A later application of this methodology was known as the split-line and stresscoat technique.
