Buckland, William

UK geologist, catastrophist; author of Geology and Mineralogy Considered with Reference to Natural Theology, published complete with a foldout chart of extinctions due to catastrophes (see catastrophism). An early teacher of Lyell and Murchison at Oxford, he fell intellectually farther behind and was eventually spent, resorting to reconciliation of new geological observations with biblical passages. Studied some of the then-earliest fossils in England; for an example of his interpretation, see Paviland Cave (Goat’s Hole).
