British physical anthropologist at Cambridge and UCLA. Known for thoughtful contributions to fields of human ecology and evolution; associated with the Spectrum hypothesis. Author of The Nomenclature of the Hominidae (1965), Human Evolution: An Introduction to Man’s Adaptations (1966), and Human Ecology (1983); editor of Sexual Selection and the Descent of Man (1972).
