Central American Land Bridge

Strip of land between North and South America that permits north-south dispersion of terrestrial species and prevents east-west dispersion of marine species. The current bridge has existed only from Plio-Pleistocene times; a previous Mesozoic bridge is now an archipelago in the Caribbean, owing to continental drift; no bridge existed during much of the Tertiary.
