Cheddar Gorge Man

Relatively complete skeleton found in 1903 in the caves of Cheddar Gorge in southwest England. The skeleton of the 23-year-old man was dated at 9 kya, showed signs of a violent death, and was buried with Mesolithic artifacts. Oxford scientists extracted mtDNA from a tooth cavity of the fossil and in 1997 matched the sample to a history teacher living in present-day Cheddar village.
