Clever Hans Effect

Condition in which an animal may perform a behavior because it is given an unconscious cue by a human observer. Clever Hans was a horse that was reputed to perform arithmetic, but actually responded to visual signs unwittingly supplied by his handler. Ape language studies have been criticized as possessing a Clever Hans effect.
