Cretaceous Period

Most recent period of the Mesozoic era, lasting from approximately 136 to about 65 mya; characterized by final rifting between South America and Africa; a mass extinction event defines the terminal Cretaceous. Fossil plants include ancestors to the Angiosperms; dinosaurs are the dominant terrestrial animal, and birdlike fossils are also found in this period.
