Dart, Raymond A.

Australian physician, paleontologist; in 1924, Dart discovered and described the Taung child (Australopithecus africanus), a fossil australopithecine found at a quarry site in what was then Botswana; following criticism by Keith, Dart withdrew from the field but, after Robert Broom and John T. Robinson described further discoveries, he resumed his avocation and produced a steady flow of new fossils and publications through the 1960s. Dart also authored Adventures with the Missing Link (1959). Viking Fund medallist (1957).
