Developed Oldowan Tradition

Expansion of the Oldowan tool tradition that includes some spheroids, pointed choppers (proto-hand-axes), rough bifacial tools, a few very rare hand-axes, and several more evolved scraper tool forms; these tool are usually found in fine-grained sediments (e.g. alkaline lakeside sediments) and removed from sources of fresh water. At Olduvai Gorge, this tradition spans the 1.7 to 1.2 mya range.
