Dolichopithecus Deperet, 1889

Genus of colobine monkey known from the Pliocene of Europe and the Far East; two species. Estimated body mass around 20 kg. Shows sexual dimorphism in dentition and skull size. Postcrania suggestive of a terrestrial habit. It is believed by some workers that Dolichopithecus foraged on the forest floor in order to partition resources with the sympatric and arboreal Mesopithecus. Dental formula: 2.1.2.3; dentition fully adapted for folivory.
