Equus

Generic nomen for a modern horselike mammal, a Pleistocene, one-toed browser with its immediate ancestral forms found in Asia. Equus dispersed into Africa c. 2 mya, and thus makes an excellent index fossil in Africa, categorically separating sites dating 2 mya from sites 2 mya, in which modern horse bones are present. Brought to the New World in historical times as a domesticated animal, many of which immediately became feral and repopulated the Great Plains of North America.
