Canadian primatologist who investigated the ecology and behavior of orangutans. Galdikas was one of three female primatologists sponsored by Louis S. B. Leakey and the National Geographical Society. In recent years, Galdikas has become the major proponent of orangutan conservation; she has taken a role in rescuing and rehabilitating displaced and orphaned orangs which led to the establishment of a captive breeding and release program at the Bohorok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. Author of Reflections of Eden (1995) and (with N. Briggs) Orangutan Odyssey (1999).
