Grande Coupure

Massive extinction and/or replacement event during the late Eocene epoch (c.38 mya) during an episode of global cooling and sea level regression, at which time opportunites for intercontinental migration resulted in the replacement of European fauna with fauna from North America and Southeast Asia. The catarrhine primates adapted to the new conditions and radiated into several new lineages; several prosimian species became extinct.
