Dipteran systematist; while attempting to classify insects, Hennig formalized a unique method based upon the use of shared, derivedcharacters to identify sistergroups; author of Phylogenetic systematics (1966) and Insect Phylogeny (1981). Hennig was a strong proponent of cladistic methods of classification in the mid-twentieth century.
