Howell, Francis Clark

US paleoanthropologist; academic positions at Washington University (St. Louis), Chicago, and Berkeley. Among his major excavations were the Torralba and Ambrona sites in Spain, where an in situ mastodon kill with associated Acheulean tools was unearthed. He also worked in Ethiopia, where he was codirector of the Omo Research Expedition in 1966, and his research there helped to push back the age of the earliest hominids by 2 my. Co-author (with Y. Coppens) of Inventory of remains of Hominidae from Plio-Pleistocene formations of the lower Omo basin, Ethiopia: 1-16.
