Howells, William White

US physical anthropologist at Harvard University; conducted fieldwork in Oceania. Known for his development of multivariate statistics and its applications to human populations. His cranial database of 17 reference populations from around the world is one of the most extensive ever collected. Editor of the AJPA (1949-54); Viking Fund medalist (1954). Editor of Ideas on Evolution (1962); author of Mankind in the Making (1967), The Pacific Islanders (1973), Cranial Variation in Man (1978), and Who’s Who in Skulls (1995).
