In vitro fertilization, the joining of oöcytes and sperm in a laboratory dish with appropriate nutrients such that fertilization and cleavage occurs; after a few cell divisions (at the morula stage) the preimplantation embryo is transferred to a woman’s uterus, or frozen for future use.
