Kimeu, (Bwana) Kimoya

Kenyan (Kamba tribe) hunter and field researcher in West Africa; joined the Leakeys at Olduvai Gorge in 1959, and ever since has been a central member of paleontological expeditions. Kimeu is remembered for having personally located several significant East African hominids, such as Peninj, KNM-ER 1808, KNM-ER 1813, KNM-WT 15000, Omo I, and critical specimens of Australopithecus anamensis. Awarded the John Oliver La Gorce Medal by the National Geographic Society (1985) and the Morris F. Skinner Prize (2001); in 2000 Kimeu was inducted into the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya, the highest civilian honor awarded by Kenya to its citizens.
