Koenigswald, Gustav Heinrich Ralph Von

German-born Dutch paleontologist; with the Dutch Geological Survey in the 1930s he excavated many sites in Java (Ngandong, Perning, Sangiran), where he located several skullcaps of early Homo erectus, then known as Pithecanthropus, and later the remains of two additional taxa he had created, Meganthropus paleojavanicus and Gigantopithecus. He published extensively on the fauna of Southeast Asia, and recovered fossils of Sivapithecus and Ramapithecus from the Siwalik Hills.
