Lamarck, Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine Monet De (1744-1829)

French naturalist whose book Philosophie zoologique (1809) proposed a theory of evolution with a mechanism called acquired characters; his theory has since been rejected as generally invalid. He was also known for exploring other environmental effects that led to his hereditary predisposition theory.

See Lamarckian inheritance.
