Lartet, Édouard Armand Isidore Hippolyte

French solicitor and prehistorian who systematically excavated the cave floor at Aurignac in 1860, finding isolated human remains associated with the bones of extinct animals. Lartet also discovered several sites in the Périgord region, including Les Eyzies, La Madeleine, and Le Moustier. With Henry Christy, proposed a cultural sequence for the region (1861). In his early career he worked in Miocene sediments, and described early examples of both Pliopithecus (1837) and Dryopithecus (1856).
