Leakey, Mary Douglas Nicol

Kenyan archaeologist; discovered fossil remains of Proconsul on Rusinga Island (1948), Zinjanthropus (1959), the habiline specimen known as George, and in the 1970s and 80s, the Laetoli footprints and other hominids; described the complete sequence of tools at Olduvai Gorge. Author of Olduvai Gorge, Vol. 3 (1971) and Olduvai Gorge: My Search for Early Man (1979). Awarded the Hubbard Medal in 1962, the Gold Medal from the American Society of Women Geographers in 1975, and the Golden Linnaean Medal in 1978.
