Little Foot

Australopithecine found between 1994 and 1997 near the Silberberg Grotto at Sterkfontein in South Africa, which has several depositional Members dating from 3.3 mya. The lowest and earliest fossiliferous layer, Member 2, contained the foot bones of Little Foot, Stw 573. The rest of this individual, almost a complete skeleton, was recovered after 1997. Provisional dates range from 3.6 to 3.01 mya (paleomagnetism, faunal correlation, and sedimentation rates) or perhaps from 4.72 to 3.78 mya (cosmogenic radionuclide dating).
