US biological anthropologist; argued that standard or historical racial groups are arbitrary and that the taxonomic category race should not apply to AMHs, and that human variation is better explained by employment of the cline concept; by 1962 he was also able to show that the reconstruction of phylogenies was possible using neontological data exclusive of the fossil record (paleontological data).
