Mediterranean Fever, Familial

Rheumatic condition characterized by recurrent episodes of fever and inflammation of the abdomen. The candidate gene, pyrin (MEFV, autosomal recessive; maps to 16p13), functions normally in granulocytes to suppress the immune response; several known mutations disable pyrin, and permit an inflammatory reaction. Affects 1:200 individuals in non-Ashkenazi Jewish, Armenian, Arabian, and Turkish populations; 1:5 may be carriers.
