Morgan, Lewis Henry

US lawyer and ethnologist. Morgan elaborated a school of cultural change called unilinear evolution. As for Tylor, culture was for Morgan considered progressive and unilineal, with stages from savagery to barbarism to civilization. He compiled and compared data on over 200 societies, beginning with the Iroquois. Author of Ancient Society (1877), in which he synthesized the social histories of aboriginal Oceania, Native America, and ancient Greece and Rome.
