Mortillet, Gabriel De

French geologist, pre-historian; revised Lartet’s chronology, and in the 1860s proposed his own early scheme of Pleistocene chronology based on the prevalence of artifact types, stimulated by the publication of Darwin’s Origin in 1859. He coined the terms eolith (Eolithique) and Anthropopithecus, and founded the journal Matériaux pour l’histoire naturelle et primitive de l’homme. He was an anthropologist at Broca’s École d’Anthropologie after 1875. Politically active, he proposed massive social reforms.
