National Geographic Society

Founded in 1888, the NGS promotes and funds exploration, education, and conservation around the world. Also dating from 1888, its printed organ, the National Geographic Magazine, often includes fold-out maps that have become international icons. The NGS continues to fund projects germane to human biology and evolution. Sponsor of the prestigious Hubbard Medal award; past recipients include Louis Leakey and Mary Leakey (1962), Richard Leakey (1994), and Jane Goodall (1995).
