Native American

Ethonym for an autochthonous peoples of the Americas; American Indian. For US census purposes the term Native American also includes Hawaiians, Aleuts, and Inuit, peoples not traditionally included among American Indians. The ethonym Native American is employed by many non-Indians (especially academics), but many American Indians do not favor the use of that label, preferring individual tribal names instead.
