Neandertal Problem, The

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the absence of a hominid fossil record anywhere else but Europe and Asia led researchers to focus on the relationship of the Neandertals to both AMHs and to the then next-lowest taxon, the pithecanthropines, leading to a historiographic emphasis on this taxon.
