Neandertal Retreat Hypothesis

Proposal that the Neandertals were forced to retreat into small pockets owing to the advance of AMHs between 36-30 kya. After 30 kya, Neandertals with Mousterian culture are found only on the Iberian peninsula (possibly Abrigo do Lagar Velho rockshelter) and the Crimea; Neandertals with Châtelperronian and other Upper Paleolithic industries are found only in Yugoslavia (Mezmaiskaya Cave and Vindija) and the southern tip of Great Britain. After 30 kya, Aurignacian-bearing AMHs occupied the rest of habitable Europe.
