Nyanzapithecus Harrison, 1986

Genus of hominoid from the early to middle Miocene of East Africa belonging to the family Oreopithecidae; one or two species, depending on author; known primarily from dentition. Estimated body mass from 8 to 10 kg. Dental formula: 2.1.2.3; dentition suggests folivorous diet. Some workers believe this genus is descended from Rangwapithecus and that Nyanzapithecus itself is the ancestor of Oreopithecus.
