Oreopithecidae

Family of hominoids belonging to the infraorder Catarrhini; known from the Miocene of Africa and Europe; up to three genera may be included, but some authors only include the enigmatic genus Oreopithecus. Diurnal apes ranging in size from 10 to 30 kg. Dental formula: 2.1.2.3; members of this family appeared to be folivorous. Locomotion is extrapolated from only one genus, whose postcranial elements suggest suspensory abilities similar to the modern orangutan.
