Pachylemur Lamberton, 1948

Monotypic genus of subfossil Malagasy prosimian with an affinity to the extant lemurid species Varecia variegata; known from several sites in north, central, and south Madagascar. The skull and dentition are very similar to those of Varecia and suggest frugivory. However, the appendicular skeleton is much more robust and has led some workers to propose that this lemur was terrestrial or semi-terrestrial. The one accepted species is P. insignis and this species appears to have become extinct between 2-1 kya.
