Palaeopropithecus Grandidier, 1899

Monotypic genus of extinct subfossil Malagasy prosimians belonging to the Palaeopropithecidae. One recognized species, P. ingens, with a second species proposed. Known from central, southwest, and south Madagascar. Curved phalanges and forelimbs that are longer than hindlimbs suggest extreme arboreal suspensory mode of locomotion; diurnal. Body mass estimates between 40 and 60 kg. Dental formula: 2.1.2.3/1.1.2.3 or 2.1.2.3/2.0.2.3; dentition suggests folivory.
