Parapithecus Schlosser, 1910

Catarrhine genus from the early Oligocene of North Africa belonging to the anthropoid family Parapithecidae; most workers recognize two species; known from only a few jaws; relationship to later primates uncertain. Dental formula equivocal; formerly thought to be, but now it is uncertain whether this species had adult incisors; rounded cusps on molars suggestive of frugivory. Estimated body mass around 1.7 kg.
