Pithecanthropus

Genus proposed by E. Haeckel in 1866 for the ape-man he expected would be descended from Dryopithecus, a Miocene ape. The nomen was adopted by Dubois in 1894, but most specimens with this name have subsequently been referred to Homo erectus.
