Retzius, Anders Adolph

Swedish physician, anatomist, anthropologist. Professor of Anatomy, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm. Devised a ratio of skull width to length (100), which he called the cranial index. A CI of 80 was termed dolichocephalae (dolichocephaly, long-headed); 80 was termed brachycephalae (brachycephaly, shortheaded). Retzius developed the Aryan migration hypothesis in an attempt to temper the growing tendency to see Indo-Europeans as direct and pure descendants of an Aryan ancestor. He also named several cavities, fibers, ligaments, spaces, and veins.
