Shungura Formation

Plio-Pleistocene sedimentary unit found in the Lower Omo Valley of East Africa; 13 dated tuffs (basal, then lettered A, the oldest, through L) with intercalated sediments comprising the various members, which span 3.3 mya - 800 kya. The Omo localities and most of the Omo hominids come from the Shungura formation. The 1.88 mya marker bed known as Tuff H2 may be the same as the KBS tuff at Koobi Fora.
