Teilhard De Chardin, Pierre

French Jesuit, paleontologist, philosopher; a student in Paris of Marcellin Boule, found the infamous canine tooth at Piltdown while a student in Hastings, and has been implicated as a participant in the hoax, as well. As a missionary in China (1923-46), he was involved in the excavations at Zhoukoudian as interim director. Worked at the Wenner-Gren Foundation from 1951 until his death. Author of The Phenomenon of Man (1955), a work that attempted to reconcile evolution with deism.
