Topinard, Paul

French physician, craniometrist; disciple of Paul Broca, and known for his work on racial taxonomy using primarily hair form and nose shape to classify humans. Author of the first anthropological textbook, Eléments d’Anthropologie générale (1895), in which he divided French anthropology into the study of humans and evolution, and the study of his trifurcate racial division of European peoples.
