Tylor, Edward Burnet

British anthropologist; Tylor constructed the theory of animism and promulgated a school of cultural evolutionism called unilineal evolution; among the first to quantify (typologize) cultural phenomena as data for comparative analysis; culture was unilineal and progressive, from savagery to barbarism to civilization; author of Primitive Culture (1871). Although ethnology already existed, Tylor is considered by many historians to be the founder of cultural anthropology.
