Venus Figurines

Anthropomorphic Aurignacian sculptures dated to 23-21 kya, usually of females depicted with explicit genitalia. These objects are found at about a dozen European sites including Willendorf and Dolni Vestonice. The sculpted figures display a hair form that is possibly African in origin, and several of the full statuettes also depict steatopygia, such as the steatite figurine from the Grimaldi caves.
