Wegener, Alfred Lothar

German geographer and geologist; Wegener proposed that original continental masses had drifted apart, causing eventual formation of modern continents by continental drift (1912). Wegener’s major contribution translated as Origin of Continents and Oceans (1924). He perished on the Greenland ice pack.
