Weismann, August

German cytologist and physician; described the complex hierarchy of particles and particle groups in explaining heredity (1892); postulated a barrier which forbade the flow of genetic information from somatic cells to germ cells (Weismann’s barrier); author of Essays Upon Heredity and kindred Biological Problems (1891-2, 2 vols.) and The Germ-Plasm: Theory of Heredity (1893).
