Williams, George C.

Ichthyologist, ecologist, and theoretical evolutionary biologist at SUNY (Stony Brook); coincident with W. D. Hamilton, reduced natural selection to the level of the individual (see adaptationist program) in the 1960s. Author of Biology of Aging (1957), the classic Adaptation and Natural Selection (1966), Sex and Evolution (1975), and with R. M. Nesse, Evolution and Healing: New Science of Darwinian Medicine (1996), and other works. Member of the National Academy of Sciences: winner of the NAS Elliot Medal.
