Cup-shaped socket formed from the junction of the ilium, ischium, and pubis on the coxal bone. The acetabulum is on the lateral surface and receives the head of the femur with which it forms a ball-and-socket joint. In female humans this structure is often oriented anteriorly, whereas in males it is more lateral. Adjective: acetabular.
